In 1955 Midland Properties developed two Palmer &
Krisel-designed subdivisions in Fullerton, California – Midland Meadows and
Midland Park Estates. Midland Park Estates was of course centered around a park, while Midland
Meadows was touted as an all-cul-de-sac community, offering quiet, safer
streets to home buyers.
Today’s featured Krisel sits midway on a 12-home cul-de-sac in Midland Meadows on a 6,500 square-foot lot and offers four
bedrooms, two bathrooms and a two-car garage in 1,347 original square feet with
an asking price of $473,000. This home is sited with the garage at the rear of
the lot, and provides a driveway that runs almost the entire depth of the property.
Entry at middle of home |
The bedrooms sit at the front of the home, the entry is at
the middle of the home, and the living areas are at the rear of the home. The
small-yet-efficient living room still features it’s clerestory windows and
signature walls of glass looking out into the backyard. There’s also a
signature Krisel modernist fireplace that spans the entire east wall of the
living room; however the current homeowner’s entertainment center and
electronics block any view of this great architectural feature.
Living and Dining Rooms - Fantastic natural light freely flows into the space thanks to clerestories |
Living Room and Entry - fireplace is hidden behind entertainment devices |
Kitchen with vintage 70's cabinets - funky & retro for sure! |
The living room is open to the dining area which in turn is
open to the kitchen. The kitchen appears to have been updated both in the 1970s
and early 2000s, but there’s something kind of funky and retro about those
non-original kitchen cabinets that we like. The laundry is tucked away at the
rear of the kitchen and is completely open to the space.
The two bedrooms at the front of the home have had their
clerestories replaced with one of the most interesting retrofits we’ve seen – two
small, square sliding windows have been placed where the full wall-to-wall clerestory
glass panes would have been. Restoration is always an option that would really help open up these small bedrooms and make them feel larger. The master sits
at the southeast corner of the home, and overlooks the front yard. The secondary
bedrooms sit adjacent to the master and overlook the sideyards.

Secondary Bedroom at front of home - upper window where clerestory once was is just odd |

Backyard offers lots of patio space but that window A/C definitely detracts from the aesthetics of the home |
The backyard on this home is on the small side, as the
garage location cuts back on usable outdoor space. This does make for a
low-maintenance yard, with lots of patio space just off the living and dining
rooms allowing for that perfect indoor/outdoor lifestyle. This is a great
piece of midcentury architecture that’s move-in ready in a great community.
